The great Taco Cleanse of 2013 is rolling to the end now, and what better way to finish it off than with an official Closing Ceremony at Vegan Nom Rockin’ Tacos! It’s this Sunday the 29th (the day after the Gathering of the Tribes) at the Vegan Nom’s trailer at North Loop and Avenue F. According to the event page, they’re making their “world-famous vegan brisket & mac n cheeze tacos (guaranteed to sell out, so get there early) and Capital City Bakery is making taco-themed cupcakes.”
Also, if you participated in the #TacoCleanse, you can get an official Taco Diploma, for the level you completed: Mild, Medium, Spicy or Fuego. RSVP for the closing ceremony on Facebook and tell them what level of Tacopocaclypse you achieved to get one.
The #TacoCleanse Zine—no one said taco cleansing was meant to get tacos OUT of your system!
In case you fear withdrawal symptoms after the Cleanse is over, you can ease the symptoms by picking up a copy of the official #TacoCleanse Zine from Rabbit Food Grocery. The Zine includes a foreword by Laura Beck, the Levels of the Taco Cleanse, Taco Crossword, Taco Quizzes, Taco Yoga, and recipes such as: Soy Curl Fajitas, the Waffle Taco, Jackfruit Brisket, Tequila Sausage, and Seitan Guisada! Pre-order your copy today, the print run is limited.
Another entry in the “Not TacoStrong” series: Taco Town’s “turducken” version of a taco. It’s just a taco…wrapped in a flour tortilla with refried beans, THEN wrapped in a corn tortilla with monterey jack, THEN wrapped in a gordita with “guacamolito sauce”, THEN wrapped in a corn husk with pico, THEN wrapped in a crepe with a bunch of French and Italian crap, THEN wrapped in a deep-dish pizza, and FINALLY wrapped in a blueberry pancake. Oh, and battered and deep fried.
Tacos do NOT need unrelated, irrelevant foods wrapped around them to be #TacoStrong!
Contrary to what Mr. Samberg says, pizza is NOT what you call a taco.
(Yes, we know this is from a 2005 SNL Digital Short. To their credit, they said the chili served with the monstrosity—in it’s own carrying bag—is vegetarian.)
Inspired by one of the #TacoCleanse bloggers, Wes Allison of the Taco Liberation Front.

While TacoCleansing, it is important to remember what is and is not considered #TacoStrong. Below are a few examples of what is NOT TacoStrong.
TacoStrong tacos are not manufactured in an industrial facility.
Mmmmmm. Tastes… burny
TacoStrong tacos will not attack you (nor should you need to attack them… unless that’s generally how you like to eat).
Looks like the taco was coming for the mariachi musician, not her
TacoStrong tacos are made with plant-based foods, so unlike animal-based tacos, they want to be eaten, and will not fight back when you try to take a bite.
This is what happens when evil scientists use flounder DNA to genetically modify a taco. Say no to GMOs!
This just in from “Taco Cleanse Central”: “Counter Culture is going to have taco specials today for everyone on the cleanse! Bring your friends for Taco Tuesday! Rotating Tacos throughout the day including a Cafeteria Style Taco with a hard corn shell, ground seitan, lettuce, tomatoes and queso and an Asian Taco with teriyaki soy curls, kinpira and tomatillo salsa.” Get all the details and RSVP on Facebook at this link.

What is a Taco Cleanse? Only the most awesome thing in the world of vegan food. In the words of blogger Lazy Smurf, “I met up with a team of taco scientists prepared to nurture my fledgling taco habit and also give me the community of support that I needed to follow though on what became to be known as The Taco Cleanse™. Together we forged a new path of wellness and self discovery.”
Created by a few dedicated Austin vegans/taco lovers, Taco Cleanse 2013 will be running from September through October 4th, with lots of events along the way.
